The indefinite articles in Portuguese
The indefinite articles are placed before nouns, determining them imprecisely, defining a type of object or being as an example of the kind without highlighting one or more. In Portuguese, there are four indefinite articles, they are: um, uma, uns and umas. They correspond in English to a, an and some.
See in the table below the rules and some examples:

In English, as well as in Portuguese, it's possible to describe things indefinitely only by using plural nouns.
E.g. Dogs are reliable. (Cachorros são confiáveis.)
Correspondingly, in English and in Portuguese, uncountable nouns are used in singular to describe indefinitely things.
E.g. I need water. (Eu eu preciso de água.)
